Post subject: | Staining sapele neck and masking fretboard |
Hi all, More q's I'm afraid. Preparing to finish my slope shoulder d spruceana / red spruce guitar. I used a stacked/ scarf sapele neck which I had to splice a little tearout, it has a tucurensis fingerboard and cherry heel cap. I want to stain the neck to hopefully disguise the repairs a little and then tru oil, no pore fill. I don't want to stain the fingerboard or heel cap though. I don't really do spray, I have stain, shellac And tru oil. Any ideas how to avoid staining the tucurensis and cherry appreciated, Thankyou |

You could maybe use a combo of masking and then some shellac applied along the fretboard edge. Question for you - are there two hanger bolts or is that one hanger bolt and a truss rod I see in the pic? I ask because it doesn’t seem the hanger bolt is sunk very far into the heel and with doing a butt joint you don’t have a lot of meat there with just height of the heel to work with. When I stained a neck, I masked off the mahogany of the neck along the edge of the fretboard and then sealed the fretboard side with z-poxy. I used z-poxy because that was what I was using as the pore filler for the guitar, but I would think shellac would work too. I masked using a green painter's tape called Frog tape which makes a nice tight seal along the edge of the tape so that sealer and stain don't go where you don't want them. It worked really well. After the z-poxy on the side of the fretboard cured, I masked the sealed fretboard side and stained the neck. It worked great. This could be done for your heel cap too. As long as you are accurate with the masking and you press the tape down firmly to make a good seal along its edge, you should get good results |
